Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery
Clarke V. Filippi, DDS – Modesto & Central Valley CA
A soft tissue graft (gum graft) is used to replace lost gum tissue and correct gum recession. This procedure offers predictable ways to cover unsightly, sensitive, or exposed root surfaces and to prevent future gum recession. This will help protect the tooth roots from cavities. It is also extremely important that dental implants are surrounded by healthy gum tissue just like natural teeth. Sometimes soft tissue grafts are necessary as part of dental implant treatment.
Short appearing teeth can also be corrected surgical treatment. While the teeth may visually appear short, they are often the proper length. The teeth may be covered with too much gum tissue. Dr. Filippi can correct this with a periodontal plastic surgery procedure called crown lengthening surgery. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth.
Bone grafting at the time of tooth extraction can preserve the area and minimize gum and jawbone collapse. There is less shrinkage and a more esthetic tooth replacement result for either an implant and crown or dental bridge.
