Bad Breath, Bleeding Gums

Early-Stage Gum Disease (aka gingivitis) Is Curable

If you have chronic, unexplained bad breath or bleeding gums, you may already be suffering from gum disease. By brushing and flossing your teeth you might avoid these complications, but if they are occurring despite your dental hygiene routine, have your gums examined. If we catch it at an early stage (gingivitis), we can reverse gum disease. Untreated, gingivitis can lead to an incurable stage where you develop pockets between your teeth and gums due to bone loss which can lead to tooth loss. This advanced oral infection can affect other systemic health issues that you may have. Two Proven Treatment Paths

Early Stage Gum Disease Treatments (Non-Surgical)
In the early stages of gum disease, Dr. Filippi can provide treatment with scaling and root planing. Scaling is a process in which he thoroughly removes any signs of infection below your gums. With root planing he goes deeper, smoothing out the roots of any affected teeth. The idea is to eliminate any crevices where bacteria can hide and grow. As a precaution, he may also have you return for recurring periodontal maintenance. These deep cleaning sessions can keep your gum disease at bay.

Advanced Gum Disease Treatment (Surgical)
If your gum disease reaches an advanced state, Dr. Filippi may suggest osseous surgery (flap surgery). This is a more complex treatment for which Dr. Filippi may administer sedation to keep you calm and comfortable throughout. During the procedure, he retracts the infected gum tissue to reach your tooth roots and bone underneath. There he removes any accumulated bacteria as well as any disease soft tissue that we can not treat. If he discovers any jawbone deterioration, he also rebuilds the bone volume and strength through bone grafting . He then completely disinfects the area before resealing your gums. This will not cure your gum disease, but when done along with a regular dental hygiene routine, can keep it manageable and allow you to smile and eat without embarrassment or discomfort.
