Locator Overdenture Case
Two dental implants are place in the front of the lower jaw. After healing, Locator abutments (from Zest) are secured to the implants. A Locator abutment is like a snap. A corresponding piece is embedded in the undersurface of the denture. The denture then snaps onto the implants holding them in place. Due to natural bone quality, the option is typically only recommended for the lower arch. Even though the denture will pivot on the two implants, a Locator overdenture is a significant improvement compared to a traditional lower denture. Depending upon remaining bone structure two additional dental implants can place towards the back of the lower jaw which will prevent the denture from pivoting.
Bar Overdenture Case
Four or more dental implants can also be used to retain a bar overdenture. After healing of the dental implants, a bar is custom fabricated and screwed onto the implants. A denture is made to fit over the bar and two are attached together with clips which are embedded in the denture’s undersurface. Bar overdentures have excellent stability and retention. Like any type of overdenture, the denture is removed for ease of cleaning the implants. These are also treatment planned using powerful software.
Conus Overdenture Case
Four dental implants can be used in the both the upper and lower jaws to retain a different type of overdenture called a Conus overdenture. Conus abutments (from DentsplyAtlantis) are secured to the dental implants after the healing phase and fit into “cones” embedded in the undersurface of the denture. Since the denture is rigidly held in place, four dental implants are required to withstand chewing forces. The Conus overdenture as almost the same stability and retention as a bridges screwed onto the dental implants. Conus overdenture cases are planned using powerful computer software to make the end result as predictable as possible.
Fixed Hybrid Bridge
A fixed hybrid bridge is either an acrylic or milled porcelain bridge that is secured to four (but sometimes more) dental implants. In some patients a temporary bridge can be secured to the dental implants the same day the implants are placed. Like any type of dental bridge, extra care needs to be taken to keep fixed hybrid bridges clean. These cases are always pre-planned on the computer.
Porcelain and Metal Bridge
This type of bridge looks a lot like a traditional tooth-supported bridge. After healing of the dental implants the bridge typically is screwed onto six implants. It can be harder for patients to keep these types of bridges clean, so excellent home care and consistent follow up with your dentist is a must. As with most full arch replacement cases, porcelain and metals bridges cases are always planned prior to treatment on the computer.
