Your First Visit
Please assist the office by providing the following information at the time of your first visit:
- Referral slip and x-rays from your referring dentist.
- A complete health history including ALL medications you are currently taking. (Please note that you can fill out your patient registration and medical history forms on our website.)
- Up-to-date dental insurance information. Please bring any forms or insurance cards with you to your examination.
Please Note: All patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to the examination appointment.
At your first visit, Dr. Filippi will review your medical and dental health histories and perform a thorough oral examination including evaluating for bone loss and gum recession, loose teeth, oral cancer, dental cavities, and bite problems.
Will It Hurt?
Dr. Filippi will be as gentle as possible. Usually the periodontal exam can be completed with little or no discomfort.
Do I Need X-Rays?
Dr. Filippi will need current x-rays in order to see disease not otherwise visible. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, Dr. Filippi‘s office will request that they be forwarded to us.
What Will It Cost?
Since all patients are different, Dr. Filippi must complete your examination before developing a treatment plan and estimating fees for care. The fees for periodontal treatment can vary considerably depending on the type of problems as well as the complexity and length of treatment. Approximate fees can usually be determined at the initial visit; but on occasion, some initial treatment or further diagnostics must be completed before the final treatment plan can be established.
Will I Need Surgery?
Not everyone needs periodontal surgery. If treated early, gum disease can be controlled without surgery. Dr. Filippi will make recommendations based on your individual situation.
Can My Teeth Be Saved?
The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow most teeth to treated. If not, Dr. Filippi will discuss tooth replacement options.
What If I Don’t Have Gum Treatment?
Periodontal disease usually is a progressive, painless infection. Delay can cause further bone loss often, lead to infection and tooth loss, requiring more extensive and expense treatment. If your teeth are lost, traditional dentures are rarely as effective as your own teeth.
When Will I Go Back To My General Dentist?
Dr. Filippi and your dentist will work closely together. If crowns and fillings are needed your dentist will provide them. Regular visits to your general dentist are an important part of periodontal maintenance.
