The Link Between Leading Cause of Death and Periodontal Disease

Scientists Investigate Link Between Leading Cause of Death and Periodontal Disease.

ASCVD (Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease) is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and worldwide.  ASCVD refers to hardened, narrowed arteries caused by a buildup of plaque.

According to an American Heart Association’s Scientific Paper released in February 2026, “There is strong evidence that treating periodontal disease improves intermediate outcome measures, such as blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, and inflammatory markers. This is an important finding because these outcome measures are known to increase future cardiovascular risk and provide a possible link between periodontal disease and ASCVD.”

Researchers point out that they have not established clear causation and further studies are needed.  However, they state that there is “growing evidence supporting as association between periodontal disease and ASCVD.”

The American Academy of Periodontology has repeatedly advised the public to maintain optimal oral health, including periodontal examinations and recommended treatment, to help promote good overall health.
